I used to like the English novelist Christopher Isherwood
(”Goodbye to Berlin”, etc.)when I was a student,
and the movie Cabaret, made from his books, was my favorite film.
Later I enjoyed the Australian novelist Patrick White.
(”Riders in the Chariot”, etc.), and more recently
the South African writer J.M.Coetzee(”Disgrace”, etc.),
who won the Novel Prize for literature this year.
(The school library has several of his books.)
Lately I have been reading Anita Bookner
(”Hotel du Lac”, etc).
I prefer modern or living writers on the whole.
I read a certain amount of poetry too,
and especially like the Irish poets Paul Muldoon and Derek Mahon,
but of course I enjoy others too.

I recommend that students try to find what
they are interested in themselves.
There is a good selection of books on the fourth floor of the library
in the “Eng.”
corner behind the elevators. One of the new arrivals,
a novel about a homeless man, “Fox” by Matthew Sweeney,
is quite good.
I am ordering more books,
but I do not have time to read them all myself.

When I was a child I especially liked
“The Water Babies” by Charles Kingsley,
which must seem old−fashioned now.
I also liked “The Borrowers” by Mary Norton,
one of a series of books about a tiny family
which was made into a BBC television film series. These books,
and the television series on video,
can be found in the library at Ryokuen.
When I was a little older I enjoyed
“Prester John” by John Buchan,
a mysterious tale about an African in Scotland
who goes back to Africa again.
I was fascinated by the atmosphere of this book,
but Mary Norton is perhaps more likely
to appeal to Ferris students.

I am planning to read some books about British history
and India quite soon(”White Mughals” by William Dalrymple,
“The Buddha and the Sahibs” by Charles Allen),
and maybe some more Anita Brookner.
I will also read some books about haiku,
and haiku collection, in English or translation,
which have been sent to me by the publishers or authors for review.
One day I want to read the whole of Marcel Proust,
“Remembrance of Things Past”,
but at present I have not got the time.
